This part presents images from Vatsala’s haldi ceremony. Haldi is my favourite ceremony out of all the traditional functions that north Indian weddings typically have. It’s the most personal, intimate and is celebrated with the people closest to you. There’s no makeup, no excessive jewellery or shiny clothes. Just a simple, small ceremony where the bride is blessed before she gets married. Pure joy. I was lucky to witness one of the most civil and organised haldis (in our part of the country – Odisha – the ladies don’t spare the bride! It’s yellow holi out and out!).
Here’s the family waiting for the bride to arrive…
The bride’s saree being pleated to perfection by her friends
“Oh you look so pretty!”…. “No…[embarrassed, coy]”
So the men are also a part of the turmeric smearing fun!
The eldest members of the family…
Turns out that only married men get to put Haldi on the bride!
